Postgraduate Dental Dean

NHS Education for Scotland

David is the Postgraduate Dental Dean for Scotland, appointed in 2011.

He graduated in dentistry in 1978 from the University of Glasgow and then returned to university to study medicine, graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 1988.  After completing higher specialist training in Oral Medicine he was appointed to the post of Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Glasgow Dental Hospital and School in 1992. 

Over the years he has gained extensive experience of the structure of postgraduate education within the UK and overseas. 

He was a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for the Additional Dental Specialties from 1999 -2010 serving as Chair from 2007 - 2010 at a time when the General Dental Council tasked the SACs with the development of specialty curricula. 

From 1999 to 2005 he was Secretary of the Faculty of Dental Surgery in The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and 2008 - 2011 was Dean of the Faculty.  In December 2013 he took on the role of Chair of the Joint Committee for Postgraduate Training in Dentistry.
