Healthcare Science Professional Lead

NHS Lothian

Sarah Smith is the Healthcare Science Professional Lead at NHS Lothian, a post she has held for 3 years.

She is also the Education, Training and Development Lead for the Department of Laboratory Medicine at NHS Lothian.

Sarah is a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist starting her career at Edinburgh and South East Scotland Blood Transfusion Service as a trainee Biomedical Scientist. In 2000, Sarah took up employment at Alba Bioscience as the Procurement Coordinator where a large proportion of her role was to educate blood donors donating blood for reagent purposes. Sarah moved to NHS Lothian in 2007.

In 2010, Sarah accepted a short term secondment to NHS Education for Scotland as the Healthcare Science Education Development Lead for Lothian and Borders.

In 2013, Sarah set up the School of Health, Science and Technology in conjunction with Fife College. This facility runs a HNC Applied Science for staff from both private and public sectors and most recently has started a senior phase programme for S5/S6 students from the West Lothian area. The school has more recently expanded in developing bespoke entry career level courses for other professional groups.

Sarah has studied at Napier University; Caledonian University and Edinburgh University.
